…To Roll Out 198 Contracts

At least, 87 Local contractors on Thursday participated in the bid opening exercise for the 2018 FGN-UBEC/OYOSUBEB intervention projects held at Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board’s premises.

The exercise, according to the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran was done in compliance with provision of Oyo State Public Procurement Act 2010.

“We allowed due process in this bid opening, which states that people should be allowed to tender for any goods and/or services, and the tender should be open in the presence of the tenderers”, he said.

While he reiterated Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s commitment to transparency, openness and integrity at all times, the Chairman also revealed that the projects are being jointly financed by Oyo State Government through the State Universal Basic Education Board and the Federal Government, through the Universal Basic Education Commission.

The Chairman revealed that 198 contracts are being rolled out, adding that the process involved transparency and due process.

He said the projects include construction of five Model schools, six ECD Pilot centers, 32 blocks of 3-classroom buildings and 15 blocks of 4-classrooms.

Also, the contractors are bidding for renovation of 59 blocks of classrooms, sinking and erection of 40 units of borehole tanks and tank stands.

Others are, procurement of 36 classroom furniture, sports equipment, 16 motorcycles and one hilux.

Dr. Adeniran also disclosed that the Board is in the process of accessing 2019 FGN-UBEC/OYOSUBEB Intervention funds, saying the State Government has approved the release of its counterpart fund.

The Chairman therefore urged most eligible tenderer to deliver a thorough job and ensure speedy completion of the 2018 intervention projects.

He said, “Bidders are strongly advised to ensure speedy project execution, as this administration has zero tolerance for time wastage, as far as project execution is concerned”.

The bid opening exercise was witnessed by representatives of Universal Basic Education Commission, Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Bureau of Public Procurement, Federal Ministry of Education.

Other bodies represented include, Nigeria Institute of Engineers, Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers and CSACEFA.

Oyo State Government has charged members of the newly inaugurated committee on enrollment drive to facilitate enrollment, retention and completion of Basic Education in the State.

The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said this on Wednesday during the inauguration of an Eleven-man committee on Enrollment Drive Campaign, held at Ibadan.

The Chairman said this would ease the achievement of effective implementation of Better Education Service Delivery for All in Oyo State, saying Government through the committee would embark on an intensive mobilization drive of policy makers, Parents, Community leaders and other stakeholders.

Dr. Adeniran revealed that inauguration of the committee is in tandem with the directives of Federal Government, Universal Basic Education Commission and UNICEF on the implementation on free basic education in the country.

Speaking on the importance of the enrolment drive to the World Bank supported Better Education Service Delivery for All project, Dr. Adeniran noted that the drive would serve as a foundation on which BESDA’s success would be built.

“The Enrolment drive is geared towards addressing the out-of-school-children phenomenon in the State. This will create needed awareness on the need to address out-of-school-children in the State, this drive would adopt different strategies targeted at communities in the State, so as to increase enrolment in Public schools”.

He expressed optimism that the committee would key into Government’s intensive efforts to initiate fundamental reforms in the basic education sector of the State, adding that every out-of-school child must return to school.

Dr. Adeniran further urged the committee to deploy their expertise in various fields to execute the task ahead, by putting in necessary resources for concerted actions towards achieving desired results in the State.

While he opined that the current situation of out-of-school children in Oyo State was not encouraging with a percentage of 18.2 in the South West, the Chairman expressed confidence that the Enrolment Drive Committee would mobilize all stakeholders in returning these children back to school.

The Committee comprises of the UBEC South West Co-ordinator, UBEC State Co-ordinator, a representative of Ministry of Education Science and Technology, three members of management team of Oyo SUBEB, a representative of Christian faith, a representative of Islamic faith and a representative of School Based Management Committee.

….Reintroduces Boarding System For Public Schools

Oyo State Government has disclosed that the State has returned 43% of its out-of-school children population back to class and working towards mopping the rest of the population outside classroom back before the end of the year.

The disclosure was made at the weekend by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Kehinde Sangodoyin at the launching and dedication of projects embarked upon by Old Students of Ibadan City Academy, Ibadan.

Sangodoyin hinted that the State would leave no stone unturned in its move to provide qualitative education without financial burden on parents and guardians and has perfected all preparations towards reintroducing boarding system to public schools while 64,000 units of furniture would soon be distributed to all public schools in the State.

He added that teachers on level sixteen to seventeen would assume the title of ‘Tutor Generals’ while Government would start paying running cost for the upkeep of public schools from Monday September 30th 2019.

“Parts of the State education policy is to improve access and participation of our students in academic activities at all levels, be it primary or secondary and since the Governor has removed levies hitherto paid by our students and has just approved the payment of running cost to our primary and secondary schools. Also we are equally working on providing furniture to schools. 64,000 units will soon be distributed to all schools across the State.

“On the out-of-school children, I can assure you that we have 43% of the students back in the classrooms now and we are working to get them all back. We have a plan towards sensitizing the parents and facilitate procedures of mopping the rest of the number back to school from the street and to achieve this, we are going to work with SUBEB and UBEC to actualize this goal.

“We are engaging all stakeholders, volunteers, traditional council, leaders of thought and the media to counsel the children wherever they may be found so that they will see the beauty of being back to school for the good of their own future.

“Plans are underway to provide them with uniform, we have free textbooks and notebooks and we are supplying them with feeding to retain their interest after getting them back totally. We all know that poverty contributed to the cause of their being outside the school and these items are the major needs that will make them come to school and stay.

“Engr. Seyi Makinde has proved himself and his administration that he does not bluff. He talks and back his talk with actions and this has been exhibited in his stride in education, security, health and workers welfare among other things.”

The Commissioner enjoined school administrators to cooperate with Government in the area of policy actualization, warning them not to collect money from students for the free textbooks and notebooks provided by Government.

The President-General of Ibadan City Academy Old Students’ Association (ICAOSA), Chief Richard Titiloye commended the State Government for the attention given to quality education, adding that corporate bodies and school alumni should do more to support Government.

Titiloye listed the achievements of the school alumni to include renovation of Physics, Chemistry, Biology laboratories, the school library and staff rooms.

He said the body earlier renovated fifteen classrooms in the school, dug a borehole, employed six teachers, five security staffers and organized training for teachers in the school and gave scholarship to brilliant but indigent students.

“Today we are marching on with our vision to bring back the lost glory of Ibadan City Academy. I know it is not an easy task, inevitably, we will require the full cooperation of the State Government to achieve our goals. Our efforts so far as Old Students are visible and quantifiable. Despite the challenging economic times, we believe our continued investment in the development of students and teachers of the school will move our school to greater academic height in no distant future,” he opined.

Ibadan City Academy was established by a late Ibadan philantropist, Chief Timothy Lajide Oyesina on the 6th February !946 and named Ibadan Commercial Academy and was renamed Ibadan City Academy in 1960.

As part of the activities lined up for the commemoration of the year 2019 Independence day celebration, Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Youths and Sports, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology has organized a one day essay competition for primary and secondary school pupils across the state tagged “NIGERIA AND THE CHALLENGES OF INSECURITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY” on Thursday in Ibadan.

Among the selected primary and secondary schools were L.A Primary School Isale Oyo, Rehoboth Nursery & Primary School, and Community Primary School Sasa Ibadan.

Others were Queen of Apostle, Ibadan, Igboora High School, Igbo-Ora, Corner Stone Model College, and The Pacesetter Comprehensive College, Oluyole, Ibadan among others.

In his welcome address the Honorable Commissioner for Youths and Sports Honorable Seun Fakorede, commended the students for their impressive performance and urged them to always give their best during academic exercises, as according to him, the future held better opportunity for them.

The Commissioner further implored the students to strive hard in order to attain greater heights in future while appreciating the teachers who he said had invested so much in their future.

“It is a thing of joy that we can still have pupils from our public schools performing so excellently at external academic exercise like this, it shows that the investment of this current administration on education is yielding good result.

“I want to urge you to keep up the good work our teachers are helping you to do and put all your efforts at achieving excellence in all you do, look at me as a model, it shows that the future really belongs to we young ones.”

The Commissioner for Education Professor Kehinde Shangodoyin, represented by the deputy director at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Abiodun Bisi, advised the students to as much as possible, imbibe the sense of love for one another as well as humanity because God created each one being to impact positively on humanity.

L.A Primary School, Isale Oyo took the first position among the Primary Schools while Pace Setter Comprehensive College took the first position among the Secondary schools that took part in the competition.

All schools In Oyo state resume on Monday 16th September 2019 for 2019/2020 Academic session,all schools are expected to be in schools from 8a.m while the teachers and students are to start the academic work immediately.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology,Prof.Dahud Kehinde Shangodoyin disclose this during an Interview in his office.

The Commissioner disclosed further that quality education is one of the present administrations commitment and therefore encouraged them to work hard by preparing the students for excellent performance.

He also warned the teachers to desist from collecting a dime from any parents or students for anything.
Prof.Shangodoyin also appealled to the parents to be alive to their responsibilities which would make the children become valuable assets to both the parents and government in future.

The Commissioner re emphasized that the present administration is working assiduously to bring back the glory of education in the state and therefore enjoined the teachers to partner with the Government to achieve its goals in educational development.

The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has commissioned an edifice of twenty classrooms in Baptist Secondary School, Isokun Oyo, town to commemorate his first hundred days in Office.

While Commissioning the Model Schools at the Oyo town, the Governor said his administration will continue to influence and implement good policies that will bring total transformation to the state.

“I want to assure you that our Government will continue to influence and implement good policies that will bring total transformation to the State while with the support of all, we shall record unprecedented achievements thus, leaving our footprints in the sand of time.”

He hinted that his administration will not relent in embarking on the projects that will provide conducive environment for the Students and enable them to explore both the natural and societal environments.

“It is worthy to mention that the present administration is not oblivious of the fact that childhood is filled with natural wonders and curiosity and that learning environment must reflect a classroom

and outdoor space that inspire a sense of wanting to investigate and explore, this was part of what necessitated the need to embark on a project like this which will enable our children explore both their natural and social environments.”

The Governor therefore charged all the stakeholders to partner with the Government in its bid to develop infrastructure in the public Schools and eradicate illiteracy in the state.

“We are appealing to all good spirited and well- meaning Nigerians to partner with the Government of the state in eradicating illiteracy and most especially in the area of infrastructural development in public schools.”

The Governor stated that his regime will continue to ensure quality and free basic education for all and sundry in the State.

“It is very important to reiterate the fact that the major responsibility of the Government is to ensure that quality and free basic education is provided for school-age children, as they are the

leaders of tomorrow.”

“It is also pertinent to remind everyone that an idle hand is a devil’s workshop which implies that if these children’s welfare is not considered, they may eventually turnout to become threats to the peace and security of our society.”

Earlier, the Chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran  commended the Governor for resuscitating the ailing standard of education in the State by cancelling the three thousand Naira fees by the Students.

He charged the school Community, pupils, teachers, school based management committee and school’s governing board on the use and maintenance of the building and infrastructural facilities in the School.

He appreciated the Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC) for providing the matching grants to Oyo State.
